[ (when you were alive....) what all games you played ,
what all words you spoke,
what all materialistic things/wealth you accumulated,
how many relatives/people surrounded you,
(All of this does not matter..... )
once your soul leaves you body ,
what is it that comes with you? ]

(2)veedu varai uravu,
veedhi varai manaivi,
kaadu varai pillai,
kadaisi varai yaro,

[ (When you are gone ) Your relatives come till the house ,
Your wife comes till the street,
Your son comes till the graveyard,
Who is it that comes with you till the end?
(The poet depicts the limits of most of relationships in life and its relevance in these lines)]

(3)aadum varai aatam,
ayirathil naatam,

[ We (wastefully) play (keep enjoying materialistic desires) all our life,
being interested in one thousand (unnecesssary) things...]

(4)koodivarum kootam,
kollivarai varuma,

[ The crowd that is there with us through all these (wasteful) times,
would it come till your grave (or beyond)?]

(5)thottilukku annai,
kattilukku kanni,

[ For the cradle (care and love) , we have mother
For the bed (pleasures) , we have women]

(6)pattinikku theeni,
kettapinbu nyaani,

[ For hunger , we have snacks (food)
Once a person undergoes(/does) all bad things in life , we have a wise man]

(7)sendravanai ketaal,
vandhuvidu enbaan,
vandhavanai ketaal,
sendruvidu enbaan,

[ You ask a person who has left (Dead),
He will ask you to go with him,
You ask a person who has come (Newborn),
He will ask you to go back]

(8)vittuvidum aavi,
pattuvidum meni,
suttuvidum nerupu,
sooniyathil nilaipu.

[Your soul will leave your body,
your body will perish,
The fire will burn it,
all that sustains is emptiness.]
