AABAVANAN

[Oomai viligal] nilaimaarum ulagil …

Powerful lyrics, aptly delivers the agony of the poor. Something for all of us to ponder about, stop accumulating wealth, you are not going to carry anything when you die, learn to share and alleviate poverty :)
Poet: Aabavanan
Movie: Oomai viligal
Music: Manoj Gyan
Singer: K.J.Yesudas
Song Sequence: (1)-(1)-(2)-(2)-(1)-(1)-(3)-(3)-(4)-(1)-(1)-(2)-(2)-(1)-(1)-(5)-(5)-(6)-(1)-(1)-(2)-(2)-(1)
(1)nilaimaarum ulagil,
nilaikkum endra kanavil,
In this world, that constantly changes state (Ever changing world),
thinking (dreaming) that everything will persist,
(2)vaalum manidha jaadhi,
adhil vaalvadhillai needhi
We human’s live,
In doing so, justice doesnt exist
( We human and so possessed with things (materialistic desires) and are constantly striving to attain them in this ever changing world, we forget that we came with nothing and will go back with nothing, in all our petty, self-centered pursuits we kill justice, compassion etc etc )
(3)dinamdhorum unavu,
adhu pagalil thondrum kanavu,
For a poor person, the main dream for him is that he gets food every day,
(4)kanavaana nilai,
pudhu vaalvukkenge ninaivu,
In such a state of mind (where getting a square meal a day itself is a dream), where is the time (or effort) to think about a new beginning/pursuing new fruitful things in life,
(5)aaraaro,aariraro,
pirakkindra podhe,
irakkaadha manidhan,
When a human is born, the one who does not die
(here the poet hints that for the poor who don’t die immediately after birth (and have to face this cruel world))
(6)vaalgindra saabam,
avan munnor seidha paavam
For those people, living itself is a curse,
and is the misdeeds of his ancestors…

KANNADASAN[Yen] Iraivan endroru kavinyan…..

The beauty of lyrics is fantastic… by the way notice SPB’s voice (in his early days)… correct me if my interpretation is wrong in some places….
Movie: Yen
Poet: Kannadasan
Singer: S.P.Balasubramaniam
Music: T.R Paapa
Song Sequence:(1)-(1)-(2)-(1)-(3)-(1)-(4)-(1)-(5)-(1)-(2)-(1)
(1)iraivan endroru kavinyan,
avan padaitha kavidhai manidhan,
The poet named “God” ( God is depicted as a poet),
his created poem are we “Humans”,
(2)adhil ariyanum moodanum undu,
aanaal thodakkamum mudivum ondru,
among his creations are also the ignorant, the blind,
but the beginning and the end are the same (all the differences we human’s create among us is stupid, finally all our beginning and end are the same),
(3)kadavulin padaipile kavithaium undu,
gandhiai pola ve kaaviyam undu,
mudivu vilangaadha thodarkadhai undu,
mudikka vendumendru mudippadhum undu,
Among god’s creation are the poems ( normal human’s),
and also epic songs like “Gandhi”,
also there exist story’s which are incomprehensible and unending,
there are also creations which are finished compulsively,
(get the link between how a poet’s different creation is compared with different kinds of people)
(4)kangalil thodangi kangalil mudithaan,
pennidam pirandhadhai pennidam koduthaan,
manille nadandhadhai mannukke alithhan,
vanathil irundhe kavidhai mudithaan,
he began with the eye and ended it with the eye,
what was born with the woman he gave it back the woman,( I think it refers to “Love” referred to as being born in women, and the manifestation of love, “new life” ( children) being borne by women)
what ever happened on the soil ( earth), he gave it back to the soil ( I think it refers to birth and death)
(5)karuvil irundhe kavinyanin pirappu,
kaalaththin parise kavidhaiil sirappu,
karpanai enbathu kadavulin padaippu,
kadavulai vendradhu kavinyanin ninaippu,
a poet’s birth is right from the womb,
the gift of time ( Poets creations become immortal) is the speciality of the poem,
Good imagination is the creation of god,
but then the poet thinks that he has won over god,

TN RAMIAH DAS[Malai kallan] ethanai kaalam dhan ematruvaar indha naatile…

The first few paragraphs remind me of what is happening in India now with all the corruption issue, especially down south :) ( seems like nothing has changed from 50 years back, the song still holds so much relevance!), This song is in the hope for better leaders and a better India :)
Thanks to mercy for the suggestion!

Movie:
 Malai kallan

Poet: TN Ramiah Das
Singer: T.M.Sounderajan
Music: S.M. Subbiah Naidu
ethanai kaalam dhan ematruvaar indha naatile,
innum ethanai kaalam dhan ematruvaar indha naatile,
sondha naatile,nam naatile,
for how long will these people (politicians, bureaucrats) cheat us in this country,
in our own country, in our country,
sathiyam thavaradha utthaman pola ve nadikkirar,(2)
samayam parthu pala vagayilum kollai adikkirar,(2)
All of them act as though they don’t deter from the path of truth,
but they all look for the right time (opportunity) and loot in various(novel) ways,
bhakthanai polave pagalvesham kaatti,
paamarama makkalai valaiyinil maati,
they put on false acts as a disciple,
and they cheat the common people but get them entangled in their cruel web,
ethanai kaalam dhan ematruvaar indha naatile,
sondha naatile,nam naatile,
theruvengum palligal kattivom,(2)
kalvi theriyadha pergale illamal seivom,(2)
Let us build schools in every street,
and make sure there is no one is uneducated,
karuthaga palatholil payiluvom,(2)
uruil kanjikillai yendra sollinai pokkuvom,(2)
with focus (ideal), lets learn many skills (jobs),
let there be no hunger(poverty) in the society,
ethanai kaalam dhan ematruvaar indha naatile,
sondha naatile,nam naatile,
aalukku oru veedu kattuvom,(2)
adhil aana kalaigalai seeraga payilvom,(2)
Let us all vow to build one house each,
in it lets learn dedicatedly (in the right way) all the arts that we can,
kelikkai yagave nalinai pokkida,
kelvium nyanamum ondraaga thirattuvom
instead of wasting days by ridiculing others and killing time,
lets us ask more questions , and combine it with knowledge and move ahead
innum ethanai kaAlam dhan ematruvaar indha naatile,
indha naatile, indha naatile

VAALI[Padagoti] Poyum poyum manidhanukkindha…..

A Wonderful song describing all the vices of humans! wonderful rendition!
Movie: Padagoti
Poet: Vaali
Singer: T.M.Sounderajan
Music: M.S Viswanathan
Song Sequence: (1)-(2)-(1)-(3)-(4)-(1)-(5)-(1)-(2)-(1)
(1)Poyum poyum manidhanukkindha budhdhiyai koduthaane,
(2)iraivan budhdhiyai koduthaane,
adhil poiyum purattum thiruttum kalandhu,
bhoomiyai keduthaane,
manidhan bhoomiyai keduthaane
god (being the supreme), unfortunately gave human this thing called “brain”(intellect),
within which are filled lies, distortion, stealth,
using which he (human) is spoiling this world,
human, is spoiling this world!
(3)kangalirandil arulirukkum,
sollum karuththinil aayiram porulirukkum,
ullaththil poiyae niraindhirukkum,
adhu udan pirandhoraiyum karuvarukkum,
both the eyes would carry grace,
in what he preaches, there will be a thousand meanings,
but his heart is filled with lies,
which will break all relationships ( including your own siblings)
(4)paaiyum puliyin kodumaiyai iraivan,
paarvaiyil vaiththaane ,
puliyin paarvaiyil vaithaane,
indha paalum manidhan gunangalai mattum,
porvaiyil maraiththaane,
idhaya porvaiyil maraiththaane,
god kept the atrocity (ferocity) of a roaring lion,
in its eyes (i.e you can know the ferocity of a lion by looking at its eyes),
but the qualities of this spoilt human, he hid in the blanket of the heart,
(it is impossible to understand a person’s true feelings by his appearance alone, lots of things are concealed in the heart)
(5)kaigalai tholil podugiraan,
adhai karunai endravan koorugiraan
paigalil edhaiyo thedugiraan,
kaiyil pattadhai eduththu odugiraan,
human puts his hand on your shoulder ( like a friend),
he terms it as his kindness,
he keeps on searching for something,
what ever his finds , he takes it and runs away!

This life is a drama,
where one thousand people came and went,
no body took anything with them (when they died),
what people gave (in terms of ideals, values etc.) when they went (died) is forgetten,
this drama is not yet finished,
when it recurs again tomorrow, no one realises,

you are one among a thousand,
(2)ennai naan koduthen,
en aalayathin iraivan,
I gave myself (to you),
you are the god of my temple,
(3)ponnai thaan udal enben,

your body is “gold”,
your heart is like that of a small child,
(4)kangalal unnai alanthen,
thotta kaigalal naan malarnthen,

you are a great donor ( by your heart), you are the leader of poor,

with my thoughts I followed you,
I engulfed your heart like the creeper,

mannava unnai naan maalaiyittal magilven.
I was eager to say it that day,
but I hid it due to my shyness,
oh king, if I marry you I will be happy
